I had an unsavory experience with Gandi trying to register a .io domain years ago and thought that that was an isolated experience. Turns out that there are a few people in that HN thread that also had unpleasant things to say about them.
As unfortunate as this is, people should have backups no matter what. No matter how trivial your site/application might be, the cost or inconvenience of backing them up is so minimal that there is just no excuse.
The reaction of Gandi staff on Twitter is something else, simply unprofessional:
