Petition to stop CentOS from being used as RHEL upstream

I know it probably won't make a difference, but I figure it doesn't hurt to try.

Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

Not sure there's much chance to change IBM's mind at this point. I suspect they see this as a revenue opportunity, even if it's not likely to work.

Can't we just branch the centos, perhaps centos-stable ? like libre office, mariadb, and others ?

Not sure who "we" are, but there's an enormous amount of work and expertise and quality control that go into the creation of CentOS

"A single swap file or partition may be up to 128 MB in size. [...] [I]f you need 256 MB of swap, you can create two 128-MB swap partitions." (M. Welsh & L. Kaufman, Running Linux, 2e, 1996, p. 49)

We'll see whether it gains and maintains momentum. Arguably, getting the ball rolling is the easy step.

  • Do these online petitions ever work?

The only times I've seen petitions work is when you physically collect signatures. The most recent case of that would be the ousting of a former Barcelona FC's president, Josep Maria Bartomeu AKA Real Madrid legend.

It took like 20,000 actual signatures to get it rolling. Online signatures never counted.

Not always but they do at least raise awareness of the mood from the wider community which in turn can result in additional resources being put into some sort of solution.

Quite a few people on the slack already (1k+), and IRC. Looks like it's got momentum.

  • Only 1k? Nah, not gonna work.

Not when the decision has already been made.

  • It's a corporate decision which can always be reverted. But it's IBM. They aren't really known to listen.

Unless if reactions were overwhelming. But only 1k online (questionable) sigs? Nah.

If it were like 100k in a day, then it could perhaps give IBM a poisoned food for thought but 1k, naaa.

I think it means 1k+ people already joined the new fork Slack and IRC channels.

I'll try to remain optimistic, but it's still a long road ahead
