Seedbox Setup Feedback

Can someone give me some feedback on a setup? I'm thinking of getting a 1TB seedbox. Transfer completed files to gdrive. Then mount that gdrive on a fast VPS to use with Plex for transcoding. Is this setup something that would work?

  • Yes, I have this setup since long time ago, for transfer & mounting you need rclone

What VPS are you using and does it transcode 4K? How many 1080 streams can you simultaneously transcode?

  • I used qbittorrent + rclone and wrote a bash script that rclone runs after it finishes download, the script uploads torrent file(information provided by qbittorrent about location, name, etc) , if you want to go more fancy you can also configure that bash script to delete the torrent from qbittorrent using curl and qbittorrent's amazing web api,

Forget about transcoding on a vps it might be fine for a few(1 or 2 ) streams, for real world use you should get a dedicated server even cheap kimsufi with Intel igpu will put most powerful vps to shame atleast in transcoding

forget about transcoding and get any storage vps with good IOPS and network.

    I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.

Well, I never transcode media. If you want to transcode then you need a dedicated vCPU VPS, especially for transcode 4k videos

I'm not really concerned with 4K transcoding but 1080p transcoding would come in handy at times. Would a dedicated 6 core ryzen VPS be adequate for that?> @codelock said:

Even a 6 core dedicated ryzen VPS with a multi-core bench of over 6K?

  • In my plex configuration, I automatically kick the user that transcode the video.

Maybe i don't have it right but in what scenario would one even need to transcode a 1080 video?

  • @cybertech @codelock is this adequate to run 2-3 simultaneous 1080 transcodes?

    Geekbench 5 Benchmark Test:

    Test | Value
    |
    Single Core | 782
    Multi Core | 3012

It highly depends on media format, codec you are using and client , best way to know for sure would be just try it,

I believe default plex client configuration (out of the box) will transcode all video format.

We have some dedicated servers which will be live in the coming weeks which have AMD APUs in them. They will be around £10 per month and could be great for this purpose 😉
