I thought I'd start a discussion here where I can occassionally post smaller bits of Hetzner news, funny and cool pictures, and other random Hetzner stuff.

So here's the first piece of news:
We have our line of Storage Share products that are based on Nextcloud. One of the biggest criticisms when we launched them was that it wasn't possible to use your own domain. But now we are running a beta test for using domains of your choice. To participate in the beta, you need to have a Storage Share package. Then just pick a domain that you want, set up a CNAME record for it, and write us a quick support ticket via the admin interface (konsoleH). Our team will let you know when the domain is active.

There's more info on Storage Share in our wiki.

Today received this. Hope there are some customers for dediserve here :

I’m writing to make you aware of a price increase being implemented on some of our products and services. We are providing 30 days’ notice, and so these changes won’t come into effect until 1 August 2022.

Like many businesses and individuals up and down the country, we’re affected by the widely publicised quadrupling of wholesale energy prices since March last year. Power is one of our most significant direct costs so unfortunately these increases impact us significantly. We’ve been absorbing these increases to date in the hope that the market would settle back to more normal levels. However, most commentators expect that energy pricing will peak during the winter months and will remain high going forward so, as a result, we have no option but to pass through some of these costs in our prices going forward.

We have generally tried to avoid price increases where possible. However, in light of the above, we will be increasing the price of our services by 19.5% from 1 August 2022.

Thank you for being our customer and we look forward to continuing to support you. If you have any specific questions about this price change, please contact your Account Manager or email iomart at pricechanges@iomart.com.

Yours sincerely,

SecurePass Email can be used to send confidential information or data that is shared by email but shouldn't be forwarded, downloaded, or copied&pasted. A link protected by a SecurePass code will be forwarded to the recipients via email. The secure passcode will only be sent to the actual recipient's email address, and the recipient must enter the code to view the email's content, which cannot be forwarded, copied&pasted, printed, or downloaded. The SecurePass Email can be set to expire after a certain period of time, after which the recipient will no longer be able to access the link and thus the content in the email.

My (non-expert) feeling is that this is something similar to Tutanota/Protonmail - two "secure email" services that I have used.

Any downtime for this upgrade can be avoided with a support ticket request for virtual machine migration to another location or system reprovisioning without data transfer. Maintenance should be expected to last between 2 and 24 hours for each location depending on data transfer speed and network arrangements.

The S/PKVM line has been set out of stock and will be retired, but a new line of virtual machines has been created with similar pricing and specifications to launch on or before 6/1/22:

https://manage.maxkvm.com/store/maxkvm-global-cloud

To possibly make up for any inconvenience caused by recent outages or migrations, all active users will be issued account credit equal to 50% of one month of service for use on renewal or new purchases.

In addition, the code UPGRADE50 has been temporarily activated for a 50% recurring discount off any new service and will be kept available as long as possible.

Please feel welcome to contact anytime with any questions.

Thank you,

MaxKVM Support

TL;DR (probably)
We are moving to a new host on or before 21 May 2022 until end of month. Same price as before. Active customer gets 50% of one month service (?) account credit. Here's 50% discount.

Translation by Google Translate:

New consumer protection law on minimum contract terms
April 6th, 2022, Category: General

In Germany, a new consumer protection law came into force on March 1st, 2022. Consumers who purchase a product after March 1st, 2022 can terminate their contract monthly after the minimum contract period of 12 to a maximum of 24 months. This means that the contract term is not automatically extended by a further 12 months after the minimum term, but only by one month at a time.

This is what the law says in Germany, but we have decided to apply these new contract rules to all netcup end-user customers outside of Germany.
Existing customers can also benefit from this new regulation.

The billing period of 12, 6 or 3 months remains in effect, but in the event of cancellation you will be reimbursed for the excess amount paid in advance.
Domains are also granted monthly cancellation after the minimum term, however the prepaid amount is non-refundable as domains are an individual product that we have already pre-purchased for the length of the prepaid period.

How does that work specifically?
Suppose you have or buy a product with a minimum contract term of 12 months and a billing period of 6 months. In the 13th month you realize that you no longer need the product, you want to cancel it. You can now do this via the CCP at the end of the 13th month. To do this, log into the CCP.
Under the menu item "Cancellation" you can see the earliest possible cancellation date via the dropdown. Enter the desired termination date. Your cancellation is effective from the next possible desired date (in the example from the 14th month).
The amount that was prepaid at the beginning of the 13th month for the next 6 months will now be refunded to you pro rata at 5/6.

Of course, our accounting department needs your bank details in order to arrange the refund. If you have not yet stored this in your master data, please let us know.

What happens if I take over another end user's contract? Does the minimum contract period then start all over again?
Many of our customers are present in our forum and use the exchange market there .
There, customers can exchange products with customers via a change of ownership.
Changes of ownership are treated like an existing contract. If the minimum contract period has expired and both parties are end consumers, the customer who accepts the contract can also terminate the contract with one month's notice.

Does this rule also apply to upgrades?
Upgrading a contract, for example from an RS1000 to an RS2000, is always treated as a new contract. Therefore, the minimum contract period starts again from the beginning and is therefore the exception.

If you have any questions on this topic, please feel free to contact our support as usual.

Your netcup team

Possible bad news, in case you're renting/colocating servers in Russia:

Russia faces a critical IT storage crisis after Western cloud providers pulled out of the country, leaving Russia with only two more months before they run out of data storage.

The Russian government is exploring various solutions to resolve this IT storage problem, ranging from leasing all available domestic data storage to seizing IT resources left behind by businesses that pulled out of the country.

These solutions were proposed during a meeting held at the Ministry of Digital Transformation, attended by representatives of Sberbank, MTS, Oxygen, Rostelecom, Atom-Data, Croc, and Yandex.

According to the Russian news outlet Kommersant, which claims to have sources confirming this proposal, the parties estimated they have roughly two months left before running out of available storage space.

Due to imposed sanctions, all Russian firms were forced to turn to domestic cloud storage service providers after Western cloud storage services cut business ties with the country.

For example, the locally-sourced storage capacity needs of Russian mobile carrier MegaFon increased fivefold, MTS tenfold, and VK had to seek 20% more storage resources in just a week.

This has created an insurmountable practical problem as there are not enough data centers in Russia to accommodate the needs of local operators; hence, a national solution for the Russian storage crisis is needed.

Kommersant further explains that the situation coincides with public Russian agencies' storage needs growing exponentially due to "smart city" projects involving extensive video surveillance and facial recognition systems.

Steps to a solution

Last week, the Ministry of Digital Development amended the Yarovaya Law (2016) to suspend a yearly requirement for telecom operators to increase storage capacity allocations by 15% for anti-terrorist surveillance purposes.

Another move that could free up space would be to demand ISPs abandon media streaming services and other online entertainment platforms that eat up precious resources.

Thirdly, there's the option of buying out all available storage from domestic data processing centers. However, this will likely lead to further problems for entertainment providers who need additional storage to add services and content.

Russia is also considering seizing IT servers and storage left behind by companies who pulled out of Russia and integrating them into public infrastructure.

According to local media, the ministry is currently analyzing how much resources would be made available if the government enacted such policies. A fast-track procedure will then be developed if they are enough to support critical state operations.

The final option would be to tap into Chinese cloud service providers and IT system sellers, but this is currently complicated because China has not yet decided how much it's willing to help Russia and on which sectors.

Huawei has reportedly suspended its equipment sales to Russia until March 26, 2022. However, being itself sanctioned by the U.S. and barred from 5G roll-outs in EU countries, the Chinese tech firm may grasp the business opportunity to fill the void left by exiting western competitors.

"Screenshots posted by Channel 5 show their price for a new custom plan starting at $7,000 a year, and that an upgrade or migration off of Vimeo was required.

Vimeo bandwidth usage is calculated using factors like video plays, resolution, loading the player and thumbnail image, downloading, and livestreaming, according to the company’s website. Overage charges aren’t imposed unless an account reaches “unusually high levels,” or is in the 99 percentile of users. Vimeo places that threshold at around 2 to 3 TB per month. In communication with affected creators, Vimeo isn’t shy about its policy to charge top creators more."

What a joke. 2-3TB?! 😆 It would be cheaper for them just to pickup a deal here.

Interesting message from CF

Always Online is a service that delivers archived content when Cloudflare is unable to reach your origin server. For more than a year, Cloudflare’s Always Online service has been, in part, backed by our partnership with the Internet Archive.

As of 12 July 2022 Cloudflare is moving Always Online to be completely powered by the Internet Archive. As a result, Always Online will also no longer be enabled by default for certain websites, meaning that if you want to use Always Online you must manually enable it in the Cloudflare dashboard.

Users who have enabled Always Online powered by the Internet Archive will see no change in behavior. Users who have not enabled Always Online and want to continue to use the functionality should follow these steps:
Navigate to the Cloudflare Dashboard
Select the configuration page of the Caching section
Scroll down to find the Always Online tile and make sure you press “update”
Note: if you just see the toggle “on” it means you are already enabled and do not need to do anything else.

Opting-in to use Always Online means we will share publicly-available URLs from your website with the Internet Archive. This allows for us to make sure they have relevant content should we need to find an archived version to send to visitors.

If you choose to not enable the version of Always Online backed by the Internet Archive, we will not check for archived versions of your website if your origin is unreachable. This may result in additional errors being delivered to visitors when your origin cannot respond.

Background information on Always Online
In an older version, Cloudflare would crawl and archive pages for retrieval by Always Online. To provide a better service, we are now partnering with the Internet Archive to power Always Online. By partnering with the Internet Archive, we can provide additional resilience to our customers should wider service outages exist as well as rely on the Internet Archive’s expertise in crawling and archiving functionality.

Got the email the other day….

Dear Customer,

We have some exciting news to share!

Today we are announcing an agreement to acquire Area 1 Security, a cloud-native email security company, and leader in preventing phishing attacks in email, web, and network environments. Together, we expect to deliver the world’s fastest, most reliable email security solution.

In modern enterprises, email is one of the most-used cloud applications. Unfortunately, email is also one of the largest attack vectors on the Internet. Legacy email security solutions are not designed for today’s cloud-native world and modern solutions often remain disjointed from your overall cloud security approach.

But now email security can be integrated into your global cloud network. The combination of Area 1’s leading phishing protection and threat intelligence capabilities with Cloudflare’s global network, data capabilities, and Zero Trust platform will help you secure your entire global network infrastructure. You’ll be able to keep your employees secure and productive no matter where they work or whether they access applications on premise or in the cloud.

We expect the acquisition of Area 1 to be completed in April. In the meantime, please share this information with colleagues interested in augmenting cloud email defenses with the most effective phishing protections available.

If you’re interested in learning more about Cloudflare and Area 1 Security, please sign up for our live webinar, scheduled for March 3, 2022.

Sign up here for our team to reach out to you once the acquisition is complete.
