Server Opinion - Shinjiru VPS Slow Download Issue

edited March 2021 in Help

Hello.
I've been using Windows VPS from Shinjiru since 22/05/2020 in Malaysia DataCenter.
In the last years, i've got no problem with them at all.
They are offering Raya Promo and CNY Promo with 1Gbps Shared Network.
However, i just notice last weeks the Download & Upload slowing down so much.
I've create a ticket for them to solved the speed issue and keep follow up the discussion in the ticket. Giving them speedtest result, routing result for them to resolved the issue soon as possible. At first, they keep saying that the caused of Download Speed is high usage on CPU while doing speedtest.net in browser. So then i try Speedtest-cli and using python installed on the machine. Of course before going to test, i am closing all non system application after restarting the server to doing the test and try to look if the SSD/HDD IO is the caused of this issue but no SSD/HDD io looks normal to me. Unfortunately, the speed of download still same . They said they already tweak the route and speed a few times and yes the route is better however the speed for DOWNLOAD still remain the same while UPLOAD speed keep going up more than the speed of Download. They also mentioned in the ticket that they only giving the customers 100M network while i am using 1Gbps Shared Network Plan. I know it is shared I do not intend to use the whole of their bandwidth but at least not this kind of too slow Download Speed. Finally, after they are checking everything and they are saying in the ticket that

**As check with our internal team, the node is not overloaded. We would like to emphasize that as you are using VPS, everything is shared including network. As we check on our end the network is currently stable. Yes previously it was not due to some difficulties that we face but its already resolved. We would also like to emphasize that not to all speedtest server customer will be getting high speedtest result as it also depending on the geo location and the speedtest server. There are various reason that influence the speedtest result.

We only able to give customer 100M as per what customer subscribed. We check all over the network and the node, there is no indication of customer facing any network issue or instability for now. If you which to get better and stable speed, we suggest you to subscribe to Dedicated Server with dedicated bandwidth.

As for now, we do not see any further issue on this as we tested on our infra and node as well.
**

I would like to know how about all of your opinions,

Is this considered as normal or not?

Sorry for the bad english.

Thanks

Below is some of the speedtest result showing of all result is slow at Download except upload.
And only a few speedtest are stable.

Assuming the geo coordinates are right, it could still be in malaysia as malaysia is made of two islands that are relatively far from each other. (But coordinates could be wrong too)

@gemuruhco Not too sure what speeds you are looking for here? They are probably a small provider and only have 1 Gbit on the whole node and even then it might be shared. Getting more than 200 Mbps on demand is probably decent enough, but yes less than 100 Mbps is pretty shit. Surely you are paying more for digitalocean, and for good reason.

why don't you migrate to a Singapore VPS for more dependable network.

    I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.

Bottom line, routing and peering in that part of the world is absolutely terrible, Singapore is an absolute joke when it comes to networking so the speeds you are getting on a shared link are as expected, I think you simply need to realign your expectations.

If you have a dedi, they can probably do some tailored routing for your own needs to improve things, that is a fair suggestion from them. They cannot do that on a shared link because the changes for you might impact others.

Also speedtest.net is meant for testing home dsl lines. don't use it as factual quality information for large links.

Highest video resolution on push-ups site is 720p that requires 5.2 MB/s (41 Mbps) throughput.
Your server has 103 Mbps, so it's enough to deliver the content.

There's no need to cry over having only 100 Mbps.
Oracle Cloud is 50 Mbps and I still successfully delivered content to hundreds of viewers.
100 Mbps is more than enough.

"I can backup faster if I have 1 Gbps"
Yes, but you don't need to backup faster.
Backup is a background job that can take as long as it's necessary, provided that it completes before the next backup job is scheduled to start.

"I can update packages faster if I have 1 Gbps"
    Not really.
It might take 10 more minutes to download packages, but the website isn't stopped until the system has downloaded all packages and is installing the packages.

"I can serve push-ups to more simultaneous viewers if I have 1 Gbps"
    Yes and no.
While 100 Mbps can only upload two 720p streams simultaneously, the content would be cached in the network and used to satisfy future requests.
Thus, the server only needs to upload each unique stream once.

At least, 100Mbps is enough for me but not for lower than that in 1Gbps plan.
Because of that, i'm creating the ticket and follow up with them for a few days. Unfortunately , i think this is not reliable at all . Therefore, i am creating this thread and trying to see whats your opinions about this. If possible i'll try to talk again with them to resolved this issue soon as possible.> @cybertech said:

It's because most of my customer is from Malaysia and prefer Malaysia Datacenter. Since we are still MCO in malaysia so many broadband provider in malaysia are having problem with routing due to overload on bandwidth usage and that might effect us if we host it in Singapore.> @InceptionHosting said:

Agree with you. However, to cut the cost we had no choice but to use VPS instead of Dedicated. It's possible to use dedicated but not for now maybe soon. :'(

Yes i am agree with you too. However, the plan comes with 1gbps at least give us 10% of bandwidth while sharing each other. If not it will be a waste for us for 1Gbps plan better we go for 100Mbps which will cut more cost right :) . I am not always use all the bandwidth but at least for sometime we could get it better for small task.

The plan comes with 1 Gbps port speed, not 1 Gbps Internet throughout.

I can connect 48 dedicated servers to a switch, connect 16 switches via 10 Gbps uplinks to 2 routers, and connect each router to the Internet Exchange via a 10 Gbps peering link.

Now there are 768 dedicated servers sharing 20 Gbps Internet bandwidth.
If everyone is trying to egress as fast as possible, each server gets 26 Mbps on average.
Nevertheless, ethtool will tell you the port speed is 1 Gbps, and you can achieve this speed between two servers connected on the same switch.

You should be thankful for having an Internet throughout of more than 26 Mbps.

Note: the sample scenario is written as dedicated servers, but it's same concept for virtual servers.

AFAIK, the only crappy ISP with routing and other issues is Telekom Malaysia (TM), or UniFi.

From what I have been told by friends, if they're given a choice to choose between TM or TIME, it's a no-brainer to go with TIME instead.

No offence to the OP but your real issue here is not fully understanding how the internet works. What they are providing is within reasonable expectations imho.

You are probably removing any profit by going back and forth with support and your budget should never be part of someone else’s problem.

I say this with every sympathy and no malice but you need to adjust your expectations.

Yes i understand and as i said before at least 10% of it. I do not intend to fully use even 10% of it but at least for just a moment like 10-15min it can boost for a simple small task that should be enough. I am not going to use it at all the time because i know it's on shared network. Even other small provider had better speed than this and they are also shared . their speed is not below than 100mbps based on my experience before since 2007 when i am starting to purchase my first vps for personal use.

@gemuruhco said: many broadband provider in malaysia are having problem with routing due to overload on bandwidth usage

AFAIK, the only crappy ISP with routing and other issues is Telekom Malaysia (TM), or UniFi.

From what I have been told by friends, if they're given a choice to choose between TM or TIME, it's a no-brainer to go with TIME instead.

Actually before the first MCO in 2020, i am using vps from other country in USA then Europe then Asia (Singapore) in other company just before switch to Malaysia vps. In that time, almost all provider are having problem with routing and cause so much packet loss. I've getting a complaint from time to time due to that. I've testing 1 by 1 vps and the problem exist one after another until my last choice was to getting Malaysia vps since it won't having so much packet loss anymore for my customer in the same region. Yes i agree with you, TM (UnFi) is the most hard one to getting it resolved for routing issue at that time. For me, i don't want this small issue to happen again. Therefore, now i am using windows vps from Malaysia. I've never been getting any Speed and routing issue after that until last 2020. This speed issue is just happen on this year and at this month. I understand that sometime it's normal for getting such slow speed but not all the time.

I Agree. Therefore i'm opening this thread so that i want to know what about other people opinion on this issue since i've never been having this issue with other windows vps with other provider in the same country before. Therefore, this issue is new for me and it suddenly happen on my budget. I also understand that budget issue is not the part of someone else's problem.
I will continue to see about what other people thinking and their opinion about this to see if this is normal for them the average people or this is strange and so that i can peace up my mind later. Btw, thanks for your opinion. :)

    Sorry for my bad english.

@gemuruhco the pings look all over the place even within Malaysia. so maybe good for you and users to test IP, up and download speed from say, OVH Singapore.

    I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.
