Virmach has been selling to fraudsters and spammers for years on rented platform, and they haven't deadpooled yet. Business is hard. Looks like I shouldn't attempt to enter this market as a provider. In this case, the VPS could be free. Customer pays monthly website maintenance fees.

This server is compiling large programs. The Go linker is reading many files. I'm hoping for even faster compilation. It's ext4 filesystem on Intel NVMe. I'll consider ZFS when it's due for reinstall. Occupied memory is 128GB of hugepages.

I'm not making money. F-1 and J-1 visa holders are not allowed to make money. I build websites and apps for giggles and LOLz. That's true. I built my own virtual machine management software before Vagrant becomes popular. A thread is worse than a full core. If the vCPU is moving between physical cores, you are losing…

Good to know. It's Google Compute Engine offering per-second billing. Their egress traffic is pretty expensive though. Virmach would definitely suspend if you exceed 33% for more than 10 minutes. Clueless Administrator LLC would probably cut some slacks. The point is, why should a customer pay for "fair share" resources…

SLURM is widely used in supercomputing to manage job queues. You have to figure out the bidding and micropayments side of things. There is a vulnerability when the same person own the clearinghouse and a provider: * Let's say Incompetent Administrator LLC runs the clearing house. * https://pushups.ndn.today submits a job.…
-
I have a different idea. These non-time-sensitive, compute-heavy jobs, such as video encoding or machine learning, are more suitable in a batch system. * Customers post their jobs to a queue: program (Docker container), command, input files, hardware requirements (CPU instruction set, CPU speed, RAM, SSD space for…

On VPS: High CPU, high IO, high load => suspend. I want to encode 1-minute of push-up videos, once a week. It would be a few minutes of high CPU on Ryzens. However, I'm too scared to do that on a "fair share" VPS. I can't afford a dedicated machine so I have to run the encode process on Oracle Cloud "1/8 OCPU" that takes…

I don't have current service with any of the above. They are too premium for me. I had two of my firsts with these providers. My first KVM box was from RamNode in 2012, 256MB, $11.35 quarterly. I canceled after one quarter because OpenVZ is cheaper. My first NAT box was from Inception Hosting in 2013, €3.00 annually. I…

My favorite is https://bgp.he.net/ It has a clean interface and information about BGP peers. However, there's no geolocation feature.

There's only one official troll. I wonder how to submit an application for a troll tag. As for the drama, HostLoc has even more of them. HostLoc is infiltrating LET these days. Every time I see a "user banned please carry on", I go to HostLoc to see how they are commenting about the banned user. I don't have an account…

I met the designers of the NIST Randomness Beacon and asked a question similar to this. Their answer is that, you can aggregate the results of multiple randomness beacons controlled in different countries by different agencies. It is improbable that all of these beacons are compromised. * You publish the list of "raffle…

We scientists work with what can be proven / verified, i.e. evidence based science. Faith department is in the church.
-
A drawback of using RANDOM.ORG is that there's no way to prove that the administrator did not run the randomizer more than once. A more trustworthy method is to use the NIST Randomness Beacon: * Prepare the list of entries. * Pick a time in the future (minute). We will be using the beacon output at that moment. * Publish…

Too late. Already terminated. Cyber Monday was Nov 30 and billing cycle ended on Dec 01. I didn't even have enough time to migrate the services, so that now my push-up video site is operating at reduced capacity. It was on EDU50 promo code. If you have .edu inbox, you can claim same price too; if you don't, you would…

China is worse. I don't live in China so I can't test directly. You may try: * http://ping.pe/ has several nodes in China, ping and mtr * https://ping.chinaz.com/ has more nodes but ping only * https://tool.chinaz.com/tracert/ has traceroute on more nodes, but you can only select one node at a time

Looks like I have competition. That's my (patent pending) idea! LEB has a deadpool category, but the conversation goes like this: * LEB: let's put AlphaRacks and their owner's name on the deadpool category. * RackNerd: if my name shows up, I'll withdraw all my advertisement, and you'll be broke!

I'm canceling MaxKVM box in Singapore to make space for others. ? It's been mostly idling for too long. Coupon code suggestions for Christmas: * create a 70% off coupon LUMPOFCOAL (limit to 7 orders); whoever uses this coupon would receive a lump of coal from Santa Claus. * rename SAVE30 to NAUGHTYLIST; wherever uses this…

I need to clean up the code and write a tutorial on how to build your own push-up video site. I think @swat4 has enough powerful boxes that they would be able to encode videos on a VPS instead of having to encode on the laptop. Push-ups solve all the problems. Serve push-up videos from all your VPS. Never leave a VPS idle…

I name my boxes vps0-vps9, so I'm only allowed up to ten boxes. After this Black Friday, my list is: * vps5: Virmach KVM-Lite 384MB in Buffalo (2017 BF), Asterisk and QUIC-UDP gateway * vps7: SmartHost KVM 2GB in Los Angeles (2019 April), main website; will be canceled in 2021 March (or not) * vps8: HostSlick VZ7 4GB in…

I had one 5-year-old user sitting on my back. However, my father wasn't pleased when he saw that photo. EPYC has a feature of dividing a single processor into two or four NUMA nodes. It would offer better isolation for some containers. However, if you are letting all the container scale to multiple cores, you won't need…

This sounds like a hoarding situation. You need to see a doctor. No, not the @HostDoc . I had the same problem with microcontrollers… 10 ESP8266 and ESP32 boards under my bed…

This looks like the perfect box for encoding push-up videos 24x7. If only I'm strong enough to record 8 hours of push-ups every day... Chest is very sore after 69 push-ups yesterday.
-
$0.002 per minute, so that I can get a push-up video done in a few pennies. Scaleway production instance is cheaper than this but it's hourly. My website contains almost no advertisement. It's entirely for giggles. Evolution Host provided a free box for me (in exchange for backlinks) and they advertise dedicated cores. I'm…

I only have underutilized box. Nothing is idle. If there's a RIPE ATLAS probe, it's not idle. I don't mind doing more push-ups, but encoding on the laptop is taking hours, and encoding on the server is even slower at "cpulimit 30%". Ryzens and EPYCs are no good if I have to constantly worry about suspension. Minutely…

Send him some push-ups and he'll add a few for you. My push-ups are served from the $1 container now.

I got spoiled by @cam and his BF-DOLLA-NAT posted on the wrong green forum, so I can resist any 128MB above $1. However, my first 128MB NAT was in 2013 from Inception Hosting at €3. At that time, the LES forum was hosted in one of these, was not green, and didn't have HTTPS.
-
Ryzen or not, if you exceed a certain CPU percentage, the server gets suspended. Virmach's percentage is 33%. MaxKVM won't say their percentage. I need to encode push-up video. I set CPU limit to 30% on ffmpeg process. The EPYC is slower than my i5 laptop, but there's no suspension.

I added @yoursunny.com to Windows Live Domains in 2007. Windows Live Domains was renamed to Windows Live Admin Center and then the whole Windows Live brand deadpooled. My one inbox remains as Hotmail account, but I cannot create any more inbox. I added @mail1.yoursunny.com to Google Apps in 2010. Google Apps was renamed to…

This year I got: MXRoute (order number 4292167729, invoice 32316), 2GB, $5/year The mail plan is not yet setup. I take it for backup in case Gmail deadpools. Note: MXRoute is not in the LES hosting provider directory but their account does have a provider tag.
