Odysee (my channel) Allegedly free, open-source, censorship-free yada-yada-yada. My guess is: if it ever gains popularity, things will change drastically, very rapidly.

Many people today think their filming wonders must be shown in 4K resolution. No reasonable explanation I can think of, but there you have it.

How can one not simply adore capitalism? :)

I don't like ads bothering me at any time. On my website(s), I place ads manually, in areas around the content (sideline, bottom, top - before the articles). And, since I often use those sites as a reference, I make a point of using them without an ad blocker. If an ad position bothers me, the ad has to go. In addition to…

As a creator of (highly questionable quality) YouTube content, I prefer getting some income from the ads or premium accounts. As a viewer, I prefer watching for free without any ads. Contradictions. :)

Hydro destroys eco-systems (rising the level of underground waters, and altering river eco-systems). Solar requires huge areas covered in those plates, along with a ton of batteries to store it during the night. Wind also requires huge areas covered with wind turbines. Battery production is highly toxic and they can't be…

That works as intended. Out of shear sportsmanship, to not put the high-end providers completely out of business, the low-end providers stage regular downtimes, late support ticket replies and once a month they get completely wasted while sorting the tickets, just for a good measure. The world is better that way.

Not 100% sure what you mean. "Plugged" as in "censored?" They listed some popular plugins that have problems. They noted the problems are fixed with patches (so no false alarms for the users who have updated, that's fair IMO). It could be argued that such articles (XX bikes/plugins/destinations that YY) are primarily…

On the bright side, from what I could tell, the problems were fixed with updates. :)

Sorry, couldn't resist. :) On a more serious note - it is an industry trend worth noting. Here's another example - Ocean WP + Cloudways: https://oceanwp.org/blog/partnering-with-cloudways/ Also, in terms of time ~ money, as @MikeA says, for some people, the offer could in fact be a good one (just as, for me, using reseller…

Yes, as @Ympker and @willie have noted above, it's about making money, of course, with questionable benefits for an average LES member. Of course, being WordPress-related, it's good that @vyas shared the info here. This looks like an industry-wide trend of accumulation. Companies grouping together, or one company trying to…

I asked on a WP for Business FB group about this. The consensus seems to be that they've done similar things before, "with good reasons," and that it's perfectly fine. Full support. I certainly had no idea until now that they (can) do that - which shows how stupid and short-sighted I am. :)
-
Exactly.
-
Does this mean WP can also do other changes - like removing articles, and/or bringing the whole sites down if they decide it's the right thing to do? Not asking whether "they'd (never, sure) do that," but whether they can, whether they're in a position to do so.
-
That's not good. Is there a way of preventing WordPress from doing stuff without approval?
-
If the provider allows it, I prefer configuring backups independently from WordPress. That is, not having WordPress (try to) back itself up using yet another not really necessary plugin. Having said that, on several occasions I have used the All-in-One WP Migration plugin for cloning websites, not for making backups in the…

Not sure about the legal stuff. But there are other ways to market a product (word of mouth, website articles etc.). An idea: Not sure how complicated it is to make the plugin "expandable" - to include fonts as required. Or to have a checklist for including the most popular fonts, whichever those were (I use Font Awesome…
-
Ympker - thank you for putting in the effort and sharing. Now, for the bad and ugly - with the intent to help the improvement, not to put you down: Read about the WordPress plugin guidelines. Try to do it by the book and have the plugin in the WordPress.org repository. Why? In spite of the zeitgeist that goes for software…

Works. Cool. :) Choosing an existing box from the robot console, and clicking on "Change storage box" gets the "upgrade" done in a second after you've picked the option you want. :)
-
A refreshing change in the light of all the prices going drastically up over the past few years (industry-wide). :) Existing storage boxes are remaining the same, or should I just give it some time? (have a 500 MB box and it still says 500 GB in the robot control panel)
-
Yup - that app looks like it.

There used to be a Windows "app" that synced Gdrive to a local directory. I used to use it. It used to work. Haven't tried for years, so can't confirm. Not sure if it's still available.

Had to spoil it, didn't you? :)

CDN should use the closest available server, right? So, visitors from the EU would get the content served from an EU location anyway, no? :)

JetBackup doesn't seem to play very well with DirectAdmin (couldn't get it to work for off-site storage with a reseller hosting account). So I use (S)FTP, and find it to be quite convenient (prefer it to any web-browser interface). Feedback from Hetzner is that Storage Box instances are connected with 10Gbits and that I…

Colour me stupid/conservative (and correct me if I'm wrong), but I prefer having someone more competent taking care of the security and similar, while I can just use the storage. Unmanaged VPS or a dedi can be cheaper in terms of money, but in terms of time and worry, I'm not so sure. Another thing I like about the Storage…

Hi Katie, Thanks for looking into this. As far as I'm concerned Hetzner Box storage is very good. Upload speed from servers (when doing backups) seems super fast, and that's what's most important IMO. Just wanted to confirm I'm not doing anything wrong. Having said that, if there is a way to make it faster, I'd be happy to…
-
Do you have a better recommendation? For automated storage of DirectAdmin hosting accounts, JetBackup doesn't seem to work well with Backblaze B2 for example, so I switched to Storage Box and that works fine - and it is a lot faster for any downloads and uploads from my computer.
-
Rebranded - I fixed the link, but didn't edit every mention in the article. As for the exposure - I use HTTPS and SSH for most work, uploads, downloads etc. I also use a silly domain (some-string.some-tld), with a silly subdomain (string.some-string.some-tld). Not even Google figures it out (LOL)! :) Unless a project is…

I don't develop new sites on a regular basis - so keep that in mind. I usually do it on a hosting server. It makes it easier for me to work on the site wherever I am, it makes it easier to collaborate, and I can see how it works on a hosting server right away. Usually using some subdomain. Once it's all good, I clone it to…
