I noticed an increase in people reporting being terminated without a specific reason, and an uptick in people explaining what it means to use the free part of PAYG, on a few platforms. It sounds like communication has been 10/10 as always from oracle haha.

I destroyed a VM, and haven't been able to create one at the lower limits. I think that's par for the course, though. Maybe if I gave them a credit card they'd be happier.
I have had an account (no credit card on account) for some years now. I have tried destroying/creating VM instances (
VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro) recently without issues for now. The only thing that has changed is I get the free account banner warning every time I login.
Recently I have had issues with the oracle cloud agent snap package maxing the cpu usage for long periods of time. I have disabled snap but it breaks their monitoring so will see if that doesn't get my instance terminated.

Just received a "Mandatory Reboot migration" notice on my instance, due to "error in the underlying infrastructure". After the reboot (and apparently successful migration), the instance refused to start because of it's "Out of host Capacity". sigh
We're writing to let you know about an important update regarding Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Always Free compute.
The Always Free compute limits have been updated. If your tenancy is currently using Always Free compute resources above the new limits, you must reduce your usage by August 18, 2026.
Beginning on August 18, 2026, Oracle will begin enforcing the updated Always Free compute limits. Compute instances that exceed the Always Free entitlement will be automatically terminated.
Current Always Free compute limits
Up to 2 Ampere A1 OCPUs
Up to 12 GB of memory
If your tenancy is already within these limits, no action is required.
Your tenancy and other Always Free services will remain available. If compute instances are terminated because they exceed the Always Free entitlement, you can launch new Always Free compute instances within the current limits at any time.
You can review the current Always Free limits and manage your compute resources in the OCI Console.

AS PAYG user I only see scary banner at top of website, but no cost changes.
Limit change seems to be for Free Tier, if you PAYG (aka you gave them credit card) you are still in higher limits

Thanks for the warning. I’ll check my current usage and payment settings, as Oracle’s free tier rules have never been very clear.
So I guess the only way of downsizing is destroying the current VM and creating a new one within the new limits, right?
Nah, you can lower CPU/RAM. Go to Compute > Instances > your instance > hit on upper right ACTIONS > more actions > Edit.
