It just seems nuts that people let some company host this stuff for them, instead of self-hosting. That's an awful lot of linux isos.

Hmm, maybe. It doesn't have to be vps: borg or rsync is fine. I don't see a need for ip addresses, especially v4. v6-only or shared v4 is fine for this type of thing. Raid level should not be 5. …
