I guess I'm currently 2/4 depending. 2 of 3 vps up (one has been random, one is partly blacklisted by comcast), 1 vps with disconnected node for at least a month, vpsshared down but idk if that "counts".
-
Oh that's interesting, I didn't realize that. That makes it more attractive, though I'll stick with FOSS stuff since I'm a die-hard about that. Thanks.
-
I also have one of those and the host node is down. It occurs to me that because the control panel times out connecting to it, maybe I can't migrate it to another location.
-
Maybe hosting isn't the right word, but having an account with the company and giving them access to your linux collection. This type of thing should be 100% private.
-
It just seems nuts that people let some company host this stuff for them, instead of self-hosting. That's an awful lot of linux isos.
-
Yep it looks like the IP address of mine has changed. The new address responds to ping, so it's not nullrouted like the old one. But it times out for ftp and http. Well it's a start.
-
Having cloudflare and server delays/timeouts trying to log into billing.virmach.com. I managed to connect after a few tries but it is still very slow. DDOS?
-
Interesting, mine has been unreachable for months, supposedly because CC had permanently nullrouted the node IP. I ended up moving my site from it to a VPS. Was yours in Buffalo? It would be nice if I could get access to mine, even if it's not publiclyback on the air.

Problems at the machine room.

Do Alphavps or Letbox have any storage offers remotely as economical as Servarica's? I have enough storage right now but am always looking for deals.
-
SJC2005 appears to be offline (was ok a few days ago, idk when it went out), and other SJC server (SJC2003?) has been out for quite a while. Client alert area says SJC2008 is having trouble. Altogether it sounds like the whole SJ site is not doing too well.
-
That sounds like a reasonable plan: although, a 1U server (not counting drives) tends to cost at least as much as a 2U, and in some data centers, an extra 1U of rack space doesn't cost much either (it's electric power and bandwidth that cost). So you could leave yourself some headroom. Anyway please keep us updated about…

Try vda1 instead of vda.
-
Fran had vps stock last time I looked, just not in the smallest size, which may be de facto discontinued because of ipv4 costs. No idea about slab availability.
-
Have you tried Hetzner (Finland) or OVH (Poland)? No idea if that would work any better for LV but might be something to try.
-
Now that goes way back. That company was acquired a year or so ago and all the prices went up, I think. They were never that great to begin with, though they were sometimes low priced. I'd say just find something else that you like.
-
Yeah I think there is a SJC server in the same condition.
-
How much space do you want? Would it be just you and me? I have a 2x3tb dedi now that I'd want to cancel, but I do sometimes use it for computing. Mostly idle, but occasionally a long computation (hours to days) on all 4 cores. Would that get in your way?
-
Hmm, I have some interest in that. What do you have in mind?
-
What is this thing about Turkey? I see some amazing offers in Hetzner auction now, even at the relatively low end. Like Intel Xeon E3-1271V3, 32GB ECC ram, and 4x10TB enterprise drives in Helsinki for €42.70/month. I'm paying around €28 for a non-ECC i7-3770 and 2x3TB drives so maybe I should just upgrade. There are also…
-
That is an amazing colo offer. 3 amps is 262 KWH/month if my math is right, so that's about $.23/KWH counting zero for the rack space and network. I'd worry about them trying to jack up the price after a while. I do think for a 12 drive dual cpu server, 3 amps are probably needed. For a 4 drive 1U server, 1 amp may be just…
-
I can understand that auction and dedi servers directly use electricity, while things like domain registration presumably don't. What about 1) storage box, and 2) cloud servers? Thanks. Re payments: I'd be ok with quarterly billing where the automatic CC charge is done 1 month before the due date. That way if something…
-
This is just for new signups right? Most of us already have DO accounts by now.
-
Any idea how much the color space itself will cost? I'm having redouble seeing it much under $100/m (2 amps) so that's $1/tb right there.
-
I've been doing my long running computations on my BHS (Canada) server instead of Hetzner (DE), just to give the DE side a break with the ridiculous energy costs (gas shortage etc). BHS is wisely right next to Quebec Hydro as I understand it.
-
Do you mean monthly? Idk how the economics works out but this storage is imagined as pure cold backups, I think. So there's not really a way to use bw=3x storage for the intended purpose and even 2x seems hard. For colo'ing something an LTO tape drive would be really nice if they weren't so durn expensive.
-
I haven't been following happenings in HD costs but this impressed me: https://www.newegg.com/red-plus-wd120efbx-12tb/p/N82E16822234466 WD Red 12TB drives for $220 minus a $40 promo code = $180, so $15/T.B (T.B separated by a period is my abbreviation for decimal terabytes, i.e. 1e12 bytes). They are consumer drives with 3…

StorageBox is monthly and is about $2/TB. The SX dedi line is a little bit out of whack starting at €1.44/TB/m for raw storage, but the last refresh was in early 2021, right in the middle of the Chia lunacy iirc. So maybe another refresh is due. I see, I'd want to get the USB thing back after the data is tranferred though?…
-
Hmm, maybe. It doesn't have to be vps: borg or rsync is fine. I don't see a need for ip addresses, especially v4. v6-only or shared v4 is fine for this type of thing. Raid level should not be 5. raid-6 or zfs or (depending on how many drives) software erasure code all work. The cpus you mention are not too bad. You'd be…

Dynadot is problematic and I think even on LES, saving 51 cents one time is not exciting. I'm just tired of one-year domain bargains with expensive renewals. Also, .review used to have super cheap renewals but they got rid of those :(((.
-
That worked for me a couple of years ago. I can't promise that it will still work.
-
I have done that. I just opened a billing ticket and asked them to charge $xxx to my card. I believe you can choose quarterly, semi-annual, or annual billing through the client area as well. What none of these let you do is let you leave an amount on deposit in case something goes wrong, but otherwise bill your card…

People don't want to sign up for something "free" and then get a surprise charge for it because they didn't use it exactly the way the fine print said. Like maybe it's only free when there is a full moon on a Tuesday. Or in this particular case, it sounds like it's only free if the client computer is in Paris.

Oh I figured out what happened, the IP address on my server changed. Updating DNS let me log into it and it appears intact. Weirdly, trying to change the root password through the control panel failed. The ssh host key also changed, which is also puzzling. Anyway, this server is back now. I may try moving my web site to it…
-
Nice, SJC2005 is back up. My VM there responds to pings, but ssh reports that the host key has changed, and my ssh key logins don't work. I tried changing the root password through the client area but between the different retries I now seem to be locked out of ssh (refusing connections). Hopefully some timer will reset…

Anyone know if CC Buffalo is on some IP blacklists? I have trouble reaching my server there from Comcast where I am right now, but it works fine from just about everywhere else. One person has been able to reproduce the issue from another location on Cox network. The server itself is fine afaict. I have not yet had the…

I just don't see it, €10/m just isn't attractive in this day and age. The alternative to paying €60 for 2 years isn't €10/m, it's any number of other possibilities such as Servarica's own ipv6 plan which is about US$ 2.50/m with 1TB disk (see Oppossum plan here: https://clients.servarica.com/store/black-friday-2021 which…

If DC remote hands can't press a button then maybe that location isn't working out.
