PSA: CentOS 6 - END OF LIFE - 30th November 2020

Just a reminder, it is less than 60 days away, to some people this post will be a source of confusion... WHAT, people still run CentOS 6???

Well, old habits die hard, it is shocking how many people would still be running on centOS 5 if they could get away with it.

Well as of November 30th centOS 6 dies with CentOS 5, I would suggest hosts stop offering it as a template/ISO now in advance.

  • We need a hall of shame for providers still offering outdated images. Bonus points for installing an outdated image as the default.

Uh oh.. on the Other Green forum, there are a few providers who still offer U 14.04, Deb 6, and so on...and shared hosting providers who are still offering PHP 5.x.

    "because our clients need it"

Logically, the hall of shame should be for clients, not the providers (not that I care either ways)

A leading telecommunication company in my country uses CentOS 6 in their servers.
How do I know? Because I have worked on those shitty box and begged them to upgrade. But you know, If it ain't broken (at least can be solved with duct tape), don't fix it.

No outdated image by default. If a specific client wants it, open a ticket and their account can install outdated image.

We can also have a Speed Record for when providers add newest stable images.

  • Seeing there are people who cling to Windows XP, not too surprising.

I miss the good old days of windows nt

  • Frankly, it's beyond me why anyone would install CentOS 6 on a new VPS/server in 2020 anyway.

ATMs and the like that run crucial legacy software are a different story, and presumably, there are special (expensive) contracts for maintaining and safeguarding such systems.

I prefer updating first thing Monday morning albeit a little early. If things went out of control well you atleast had the whole team to work with and get a solution sooner than later.. but it's just me.

Even better, update on Christmas Eve. The next workday for most people would be January 2.

What if "whole team" is only yourself?
